There's something oddly comforting about having the same tastes as a disillusioned 14 year-old girl.
When I was 14, I was listening to the Replacements, Husker Du, and Fugazi (something a 24 year-old bitter jerk SHOULD be listening to) so I guess it's a proper juxtaposition that I'm now the only one wearing an over-21 bracelet at a Jimmy Eat World/Taking Back Sunday show.
So, I bought a pair of emo shoes yesterday. Traditional emo footwear consists of Chuck Taylors, Saucony, and New Balance. When when last I was shopping for shoes, these were all considerations, but instead I purchased Converse one-stars, a grunge throwback. These lasted 3 years.
But like all good things my one-stars came to their end, I was eager to buy a new pair. And of course, like all my favorite things: the omwich, and crystal pepsi, they were discontinued. So, I set off again on a quest for a similar shoe and I discovered
Macbeth Shoes. The MOST EMO SHOES EVER. They're run by a guy from Alkaline Trio and Tom Delonge from Blink-182 and some other warped band. Pretty neat, but a clothing company? That's not very punk rock...but still amusing...especially since I came across them in Hot Topic...which always amuses me.
So I was in Journeys, about to purchase some Vans (ha!) when I asked about Macbeth shoes, and the last pair they had in the store was in my size.
So I have emo shoes, and the girl in the Bauhaus shirt that sold them to me showed me that there are lyrics written under the pad on the sole.
Mine say: "Stop Dead Weight and Wonder"
Thanks Emo shoes.
They also come with a sticker of their logo, which is a lion with wings.
Oh, Emo Shoes, you're so nice!
So to recap: I'm wearing clothing to make fun of a clothing company made up of bands I actually like but make fun of because they are from a self-effacing genre that I enjoy from a distance, but appreciate for both the music and the ridiculous nature of the subculture. But I like the clothing!
I have achieved meta-irony. My last attempt was when I was 14 and I tried to wear a fanny pack as a joke, but that failed. But now, I am triumphant!
Long live Meta-Irony!
Next, I'm going to wear a trucker hat to make fun of people who bought trucker hats to make fun of people who wore trucker hats because they're fashionable because people wore them to make fun of truckers...but now, I'm going to go watch Fuse.
